Biographical Sketch:
Deborah Weatherston has been the Executive Director of the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health since 2001 where she is closely involved with the nationally recognized, professional development plan for infant and family professionals, the MI-AIMH Endorsement for Culturally-Sensitive, Relationship-Focused Practice Promoting Infant Mental Health. Weatherston co-developed and directed the Graduate Certificate Program in Infant Mental Health at the Merrill-Palmer Institute of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, USA beginning in 1988 and continuing through 2004. She is a ZERO TO THREE Fellow (1999-2000) and has written numerous articles which have appeared in the Journal for ZERO TO THREE. She co-authored the 1st and 2nd editions of Infant Mental Health Services: Supporting Competencies/Reducing Risks (1989; 2002) and co-edited Case Studies in Infant Mental Health: Risk, Resiliency, and Relationships (2002). Recent publications include a development wheel titled Baby Stages: A Social and Emotional Guide for Parents and Caregivers, two chapters in the Handbook for Training and Practice in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health, (2005) edited by Karen Finello, a journal article describing the graduate certificate program in Infants and Young Children (2006), a journal article describing the competencies and endorsement in the Infant Mental Health Journal (2009) and articles in the November 2007, July 2010 and November 2010 Journal for ZERO TO THREE about reflective supervision as a cornerstone for competency in the infant and family field and home visiting practice. In addition, Weatherston is a Board Member of the World Association for Infant Mental Health where she is a member of the training committee. Weatherston received her MA in Human Development and PhD in Education, Sociology & Psychology (Interdiscipinary) from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Her post-graduate work includes a Graduate Certificate in Infant Mental Health. She is a licensed social worker and Infant Mental Health Mentor, IMH-E (IV).
